Rush Limbaugh says: “I can see a possibility of supporting this nomination if I can be convinced that she does have a sensibility toward life in a legal sense.” While not backing off on calling Sotomayor as a “reverse racist,” Limbaugh apparently reads the same vagueness into Sotomayor’s position others have, and not without cause.

Judge Sotomayor’s supporters have claimed her remark on “wise Latinas” reaching “better conclusions” by virtue of their ethnicity and experience was “unscripted,” but “that comment was from the prepared text of a speech that Sotomayor then published as a law-review article. Now it turns out that Sotomayor made substantially similar comments in a 1994 speech.”

Senator Pat Leahy says Sotomayor walked back remarks on a “wise Latina” having better judicial rulings than a white man in meeting Tuesday. According to Leahy, she said: “Of course, one’s life experience shapes who you are. But ultimately and completely — and she used those words — as a judge, you follow the law.”
