June 5, 2009

NFL Players Association settles a lawsuit for just under $28 million brought on behalf of over two thousand “retired players who claimed the union had breached licensing and marketing terms for use of their images in video games, sports trading cards and other dealings.” $1350 a pop isn’t enough to make the old-timers happy.

Daou: The Emptiness of Obama's Cairo Speech

June 4, 2009

I know many will gush over President Obama’s Cairo speech and I’m likely swimming against the tide of the media and my fellow Democrats and progressives. But reading the transcript, I was struck by two things: 1. Aside from a few platitudes, it is disappointingly weak on human rights and specifically women’s rights. 2. It […]

Morrissey: Obama's Cairo Speech Surprisingly Good

June 4, 2009

I didn’t get the chance to watch Barack Obama’s Cairo speech live, although I’m sure that it will be chopped up on YouTube within the next couple of hours. Instead, I read the full text posted by Andrew Malcolm, as well as Andrew’s commentary, and in most ways, it wouldn’t differ from a similar speech […]

Federalism and Marriage: Is Obama Taking Gay Supporters for Granted?

June 4, 2009

If gay and lesbian advocates are truly disappointed with President Obama, perhaps they should start pursuing political alliances, however unlikely they may seem, with those who believe that American voters, not judges, should decide hot button social issues. Ultimately, I suspect they would be wise to do so.

Rush Limbaugh Flips on Sotomayor, May Support Her Because of Abortion Position

June 4, 2009

Rush Limbaugh says: “I can see a possibility of supporting this nomination if I can be convinced that she does have a sensibility toward life in a legal sense.” While not backing off on calling Sotomayor as a “reverse racist,” Limbaugh apparently reads the same vagueness into Sotomayor’s position others have, and not without cause.

June 4, 2009

Judge Sotomayor’s supporters have claimed her remark on “wise Latinas” reaching “better conclusions” by virtue of their ethnicity and experience was “unscripted,” but “that comment was from the prepared text of a speech that Sotomayor then published as a law-review article. Now it turns out that Sotomayor made substantially similar comments in a 1994 speech.”

Adam Baldwin Blogs on Global Citizenship and Social Injustice

June 4, 2009

Best known as Jayne from Joss Whedon’s Firefly, Baldwin has some interesting views: “Students do not attend public school so that teachers can make them hate American culture, society and their own species; that the human race is some kind of dangerous animal that must be culled by Planned Parenthood, or world government.”

Sotomayor Meets With the Senate, Backs Off "Wise Latina" Remarks

June 3, 2009

Senator Pat Leahy says Sotomayor walked back remarks on a “wise Latina” having better judicial rulings than a white man in meeting Tuesday. According to Leahy, she said: “Of course, one’s life experience shapes who you are. But ultimately and completely — and she used those words — as a judge, you follow the law.”

Obama Says Iran's Nuclear Energy Program is Completely Legit

June 3, 2009

In a BBC interview, POTUS says Iran’s very controversial nuclear program is the answer to “legitimate energy concerns.” “The comments echo remarks Obama made in Prague last month in which he said his administration would “support Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy with rigorous inspections” if Iran proves it is no longer a nuclear threat.”
